DuckStation: The Best PS1 Emulator Right Now

DuckStation has become the go-to PS1 emulator for good reason — it’s accurate, fast, actively maintained, and runs on every major platform. Whether you’re on Windows, Mac, Linux, or Android, this guide gets you set up in minutes.

Download DuckStation

  • Windows / Mac / Linux — download from duckstation.org or the GitHub releases page
  • Android — download the APK from the GitHub releases (not on Google Play — use the official APK)

Step 1: Get the BIOS File

DuckStation requires a PS1 BIOS file. Download SCPH5501.BIN (USA v3.0) — it’s the most compatible with DuckStation.

You can also use:

  • SCPH1001.BIN (USA v2.2) — also excellent
  • SCPH5500.BIN (Japan) for Japanese games
  • SCPH5502.BIN (Europe/PAL) for European games

Step 2: Set the BIOS Directory (PC)

  1. Launch DuckStation
  2. Go to Settings → BIOS
  3. Click Browse next to “BIOS Directory”
  4. Select the folder where you saved the .BIN file
  5. DuckStation scans the folder and detects the BIOS automatically

You should see your BIOS file listed in the table below with a green checkmark.

Step 2b: Set the BIOS File (Android)

  1. Open DuckStation on Android
  2. Tap the hamburger menu (☰) → Settings
  3. Tap BIOS Settings
  4. Tap BIOS Directory and navigate to the folder containing your .BIN file
  5. Confirm — the BIOS will be detected automatically

A good location for the BIOS file on Android:

/storage/emulated/0/DuckStation/bios/SCPH5501.BIN

Step 3: Add Games to Your Library

PC:

  1. Go to Settings → Game List
  2. Click the + button and add your game directories
  3. DuckStation scans and displays your games with covers

Android:

  1. Tap ☰ → Game Library
  2. Tap Scan for Games and select your game folder
  3. Games appear in the library with artwork

DuckStation supports these game formats:

  • .iso, .img, .bin (with .cue)
  • .chd (compressed, recommended — smaller file size)
  • .pbp (PSP format, also works for PS1)

Step 4: Enhance Graphics

This is where DuckStation shines. Even on original PS1 hardware, 3D games rendered at 240p–480p. DuckStation lets you render at much higher resolutions with smoothed geometry.

Internal Resolution

Go to Settings → Graphics → Rendering:

  • 1x (Native) — original pixel look
  • 3x (720p equivalent) — good starting point
  • 5x (1080p equivalent) — smooth, recommended for modern monitors
  • 8x (4K equivalent) — requires powerful GPU

PGXP (Geometry Precision)

Enable PGXP in Settings → Graphics → Enhancements:

  • PGXP Geometry Correction — eliminates texture warping
  • PGXP Texture Correction — fixes texture perspective
  • PGXP Depth Buffer — improves depth sorting

This is the most impactful visual improvement — games look dramatically cleaner with PGXP enabled.

Texture Filtering

  • Nearest Neighbor — original look
  • Bilinear — smooth textures
  • JINC2 — high-quality filtering for better detail

Widescreen

Some games support widescreen hacks. In game-specific settings (right-click a game → Properties), you can enable widescreen for compatible titles.

Step 5: Configure Controllers

PC: DuckStation auto-detects Xbox, PlayStation, and most USB controllers. Go to Settings → Controllers → Port 1 and select your connected device.

For keyboard, default mappings:

  • D-Pad → Arrow keys
  • Cross → Z, Circle → X, Square → A, Triangle → S
  • L1 → Q, R1 → W, Start → Enter, Select → Right Shift

Android: Bluetooth and USB controllers work automatically. DuckStation also supports on-screen touch controls — configure them in Settings → Controllers → Port 1 → Touch Settings.

Step 6: Save States & Memory Cards

Save states (quick saves that bypass in-game saves):

  • PC: F1 to save, F2 to load. Slots selectable in the emulation toolbar.
  • Android: Volume buttons or on-screen overlay buttons

Memory cards are automatic — DuckStation creates virtual memory cards per game (or global cards if you prefer). No configuration needed.

Performance Tips

For low-end PCs:

  • Set Internal Resolution to 1x or 2x
  • Disable PGXP if you need more performance
  • Use software rendering (Settings → Graphics → Rendering → Software)

For Android:

  • Use Vulkan renderer for best performance
  • Lower Internal Resolution if the device gets hot or lags
  • Enable “Threaded Rendering” in advanced graphics settings

Common Issues

Game boots to black screen
→ Try a different BIOS version (SCPH1001.BIN if you’re using SCPH5501.BIN, or vice versa).

Texture warping or polygon jitter
→ Enable PGXP Geometry Correction in Graphics settings.

No audio
→ Check Settings → Audio — ensure the output device is your speakers/headphones and volume isn’t muted.

Slow performance on Android
→ Switch from OpenGL to Vulkan in Settings → Graphics → Rendering.

BIOS not found
→ Make sure the .BIN file is in the folder you pointed DuckStation to. Check Settings → BIOS to verify detection.

DuckStation vs ePSXe: Which to Use?

If you’re choosing for the first time — use DuckStation. It’s newer, more accurate, actively maintained, and better on Android. ePSXe is a classic but hasn’t seen major updates since 2019.

All BIOS files needed for DuckStation are on the downloads page.
